George Natembeya Lists Major Gains in Agriculture, Health and Roads in State of County Address

Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya on Thursday, December 11, 2025, declared that his administration’s promises are “firmly turning into progress,” citing increased food production, expanded healthcare services and major infrastructure upgrades during his 2025 State of the County Address.

Speaking before the County Assembly, Natembeya said his government has begun delivering on its central pledge dubbed Promise to Progress noting that food security, water access, roads and youth empowerment have seen the biggest leaps in the last two years.

When leaders choose the people over power, and service over self, progress is inevitable,” Natembeya said, opening a speech that reviewed achievements ranging from agriculture to education and disaster response.

How many households did Natembeya’s Fulizs Njaa initiative benefit?

Natembeya said the county’s free certified seed distribution under the Fukuza Njaa initiative has reached 459,000 households since 2023, raising maize production from 4.8 million 90kg bags in 2022 to 7 million bags in 2025.

Food security is no longer a mirage it is our reality,” he said.

The governor announced the establishment of seven grain warehouses, nine maize dryers, and new value chain investments in avocado, sunflower and coffee.

A 16,000-litre milk pasteurizer and a 3,000-litre extended shelf-life facility in Cherangany are now operational.

In addition, the governor reported that more than 20 million trees have been planted since 2023, increasing the county’s tree cover from 15.1% to 16.1%.

Through the World Bank–funded Financing Locally Led Climate Action (FLLoCA) program, the county has equipped and solarized 27 boreholes, extended 52km of water pipelines and protected 27 springs.

These interventions have reduced the average distance to clean water from 5 kilometers to 1.5 kilometers,” he said.

The governor further said his administration opened and reshaped 1,200 kilometers of roads and graveled 300 kilometers during the past year. Three new box culverts were installed, with two more scheduled this year.

My administration resolved that every road that is graded must also be graveled to enhance durability,” he said.

The county also constructed and renovated several markets including Weonia, Mitume, Kapkoi and Kapkarwa and increased monthly market revenue to KSh 2.4 million.

NateCare programme

Natembeya described healthcare reforms as “dear to my heart,” highlighting the NateCare program, which provides medical insurance to 35,000 households.

Natembeya issused his 2025 State of the County address on December 11, 2025.

The governor said that all nine sub-county hospitals now have maternal theatres, and the new Tom Mboya Mother and Baby Hospital will be commissioned early next year.

However, he cautioned that delayed reimbursements from the Social Health Authority threaten services at the Wamalwa Kijana Teaching and Referral Hospital.

With this revenue not coming through, how will we deliver healthcare to our people?” he asked, urging urgent action.

The governor announced that over 700 assistive devices have been distributed to persons living with disabilities and that 3,000 youths benefited from the Ukombozi social empowerment programme’s cash transfer phase.

Highlighting the county’s sporting talent, Natembeya celebrated world champion Emmanuel Wanyonyi, saying his achievements “lifted the spirit of an entire county.”

The governor also said the 20,000-seat Kenyatta Stadium, now 67% complete, will be finished this financial year.

The governor reaffirmed commitment to ECDE learners through the Ukombozi School Milk Programme, noting that 47,000 children receive milk twice a week.

He said 61 twin classrooms and 28 ablution blocks have been built, and 781 ECDE teachers confirmed on permanent terms.

On higher learning, the county is working with Kibabii University and Nigeria’s Bells University to establish Trans Nzoia’s first local university.

Natembeya also addressed recent floods that displaced more than 9,000 people in Kwanza, Endebess and Saboti, noting that all rescue camps have been closed after successful humanitarian support.
