Six veteran athletes from Elgeyo Marakwet will be heading to Daegu, South Korea in August after successful competition in Nairobi, conducted by Athletics Kenya (AK).
Following the recently concluded National Masters Championship held at Uhuru Stadium, Nairobi, the county delivered an outstanding performance, emerging among the top-performing regions with six athletes qualifying to represent Kenya at the upcoming International Masters Competition.
The Masters Championship brings together veteran athletes aged 35 years and above.
A total of 21 athletes from Elgeyo Marakwet participated in the national event, with six securing national team slots.
Led by County Masters Athletics Chairman Aaron Chumo, the team officially handed back the county flag to the County Executive CEC for Sports, Culture and Youth Affairs, Michael Kibiwott at the Governor’s office, in recognition of the successful participation and achievement.
Speaking during the event, Kibiwott commended the athletes for their remarkable achievement.
“The success reflects the county’s growing strength in masters athletics and demonstrates that age is not a barrier to sporting excellence” he said.
The Chairman together with the technical team expressed gratitude to Elgeyo Marakwet Governor Wisley Rotich for his continued support towards sports development in the county.
Also present was the department’s Director, Silas Kiplagat.
Athletes who qualified to represent Kenya:
- Francis Bowen, 52 years – 10,000m and 5,000m
- Rosalyne David, 50 years – 10,000m and 5,000m
- Leonida Opiyo, 58 years – 1,500m and 5,000m
- Paul Kipkorir, 45 years – 10,000m
- Florence Chepsoi, 42 years – 10,000m and 1,500m
- Julius Bilat, 73 years – 10,000m and 1,500m
