Uasin Gishu Governor Jonathan Bii Chelilim has outlined how his administration has transformed Eldoret since it was declared Kenya’s fifth city.
Eldoret was officially conferred the city status in August 2024.
According to Governor Bii, today, the city is a modern and globally competitive hub thanks to his administration.
“In under two years since Eldoret attained city status, we have made significant strides in transforming our city into a modern and globally competitive hub,” the county boss said on Friday, May 8, 2026.

Among the progress made, according to Governor Bii, is the construction of link roads in major residential estates like Langas, Mwanzo, Maili Nne, Kipkaren, Shauri, and Bandaptai.
He also noted that the construction of an ultra-modern market for over 4,500 traders is set to further strengthen Eldoret’s position as a leading commercial centre.
“At the same time, affordable housing projects at Pioneer, Railway City, Kidiwa, and AMS are redefiningRet our skyline and creating employment opportunities for our youth,” Bii said.
He also revealed that plans are underway to install 20,000 street lights fitted with digital CCTV cameras through the approved Public-Private Partnership (PPP) by the National Treasury.

Governor Bii described the plan as a major step toward enhancing security and supporting a vibrant 24-hour economy.
In addition, the county boss hinted at ongoing discussions with the Cooperative Bank on areas of collaboration as they prepare to roll out the landmark Kenya Urban Support Program in Eldoret, expected to further accelerate Eldoret city’s transformation agenda.
