Governor George Natembeya says Trans Nzoia won’t be split to create Mt. Elgon County

Trans Nzoia County Governor George Natembeya has opposed a proposal made to the National Dialogue team to increase the number of counties from the current 47 to 56.

Mt. Elgon, Kuria, East Pokot,  Mwingi, Teso, Gucha, Suba, Ijara and Nakuru West are the proposed counties.

But speaking in the Milimani area on the outskirts of Kitale town, Natembeya said Trans Nzoia County is not available for splitting to create Mt. Elgon County.

The county boss further said he would do everything possible within his means to protect all the boundaries of Trans Nzoia County.

He asked people demanding Mt. Elgon County to pursue their interests through Bungoma County.

“Those of you who are agitating for their own county claiming they are a minority in Trans Nzoia should know that Trans Nzoia won’t split as long as I am the Governor of this county,” Natembeya said.

The tough-talking County boss also dismissed Sabaot community claims that they have been discriminated against in terms of employment opportunities.

Trans Nzoia is a cosmopolitan county and it is not true that some communities have been sidelined. You have a Deputy Governor, a Senator, a Women Representative, a CEC and a Chief Officer, where is discrimination?” Natembeya asked.

Recently, the Sabaot Community Council of Elders as well as the chairperson of Trans Nzoia County government workers chairman Samuel Kiboi demanded their own county.

The community want to govern itself and to enjoy the fruits of devolution.
