The Selection Panel for recruitment of nominees for appointment as chairperson and members of Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has concluded interviews for the shortlisted candidates.
The interviews which started on March 24, 2025 came to an end on Friday April 25, 2025 after the panel interviewed 118 shortlisted candidates for both chairperson and member positions.
How many candidates were shortlisted for IEBC chairperson position?
While addressing the media after conclusion of the exercise, the panel’s chairperson Dr. Nelson Makanda disclosed that all the 11 candidates shortlisted for IEBC chairperson position showed up for interviews.
“Out of the 111 candidates shortlisted for the member position, 107 candidates presented themselves for interviews, with four candidates opting out for personal reasons,” Dr. Makanda said.
Dr. Makanda further stated that throughout, the selection panel ensured that the recruitment process complied with the constitutional and statutory requirements.
“We wish to most profoundly thank the people of Kenya and the media for their engagement and feedback so far on the selection process. The media has enabled the people of Kenya to follow and engage with the process. We remain grateful for this gesture,” he said.

Additionally, the chairperson re-assured of the panel’s commitment in conducting the selection exercise in an impartial, fair and transparent manner and in accordance with the constitution and relevant statutes.
What next after interviews for IEBC selection panel?
Following the completion of the interview process, the selection panel will now retreat to conclude the selection process. It shall select two persons qualified to be appointed as IEBC chairperson and nine persons qualified to be appointed as members of the commission.
The names will be forwarded to the president for nomination of one person for appointment as the chairperson and six persons for appointment as members.
The President shall, within seven days of receipt of the names forward the list of nominees to the National Assembly for approval.
Thereafter, the president shall, within seven days of receipt of the names approved by the National Assembly, by notice in the Gazette, appoint the chairperson and the members of the IEBC.
