Through far-reaching reforms under the Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA), the Government is expanding access to quality, affordable medical services while positioning Kenya as a premier destination for specialised treatment and medical research.

The new Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital (MTRH) Multi-Specialty Hospital in Kiplombe, Uasin Gishu County, is a major investment towards realising this ambition.

Under construction on a 200-acre site near Eldoret Airstrip, the facility is designed to ease congestion at the existing MTRH and expand access to advanced treatment.

The first phase of the project will deliver 2,000 beds, including 60 Intensive Care Unit (ICU) beds and 120 High Dependency Unit (HDU) beds, within a master plan targeting 4,000 beds. The Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) is overseeing project implementation.

Additionally, the complex will also include a student village for medical trainees and researchers, strengthening Kenya’s capacity for specialist training, innovation and research.

Which regions will the new MTRH project serve?

Once operational, the facility will serve millions across the Rift Valley, Western Kenya and the wider East African region, supporting the country’s Universal Health Coverage (UHC) goals under the Social Health Authority (SHA).

“The State Department for Internal Security and National Administration recognises access to essential services as a pillar of national security,” notes Interior Principal Secretary Dr Raymond Omollow.

He added that by expanding access to critical medical services, the project will strengthen community wellbeing, human security and national preparedness while contributing to a healthier and more productive population.

Last week, the Cabinet approved the new MTRH project, alongside the upgrade of 13 other health facilities across the country.
