The long-awaited Kapchepchai water project, aimed at providing clean and potable water to over 150 households in Cheptiret, officially kicked off with strong backing from the local community.
The project was launched by Uasin Gishu County Governor Dr. Jonathan Bii Chelilim, and has already begun to take shape with the community’s active participation.
During a consultative meeting held on March 20, 2025, between the community, project management committee, FLoCCA project committee, and county officials, the importance of collaboration was emphasized.
Led by Cheptiret/Kipchamo Ward Administrato Mary Birgen, the meeting highlighted the crucial role of local leadership and community support in ensuring the project’s success.
How locals will benefit from Kapchepchai water project
The Kapchepchai water project includes a 10,000-litre water tank, a 1.5-kilometer distribution line, and a water kiosk to serve the local population.
The project is part of Governor Bii’s broader efforts to enhance access to water for both domestic use and irrigation, in alignment with his leadership manifesto under Nguzo Number 7.
Climate Unit Officer for Kesses Sub-County Ann Chepkoech expressed the importance of local ownership, stating, “The Financing Locally-Led Climate Action Program is focused on restoring water sources and making water accessible to our people.”
“Once completed, this project will belong to you, and it’s essential that you take ownership from the start.”
The project’s contractor reassured the community that work would proceed according to the established schedule and specifications, with no delays.
“We are pleased that the contractor has hired local youth as labourers, and we are seeing good progress. It’s crucial for everyone to stay involved to avoid any obstacles that could affect the project’s success. Let’s address all our grivances procedurally,” added social safeguards Officer Sally Sang.
With the residents’ ongoing support and the commitment from county leadership, the Kapchepchai water project is set to bring lasting benefits to the region.
