Kenyatta National Hospital Doctors Save Patient Impaled by Steel Rod in Complex Pelvic Surgery

Doctors at Kenyatta National Hospital have successfully performed a highly complex life-saving surgery on a young male patient who sustained a severe penetrating pelvic injury following a construction site accident.

The patient was accidentally impaled by two steel rebar rods that pierced through his pelvis from the back to the front, causing a pelvic fracture and extensive soft tissue injuries in what medical teams described as an exceptionally critical trauma case.

Remarkably, despite the devastating nature of the injuries, major blood vessels and other vital pelvic organs narrowly escaped damage — a factor doctors say played a crucial role in the patient’s survival.

The emergency operation demanded swift coordination, advanced surgical expertise, and seamless collaboration among multiple specialist teams,” KNH said in a statement on Thursday, May 28, 2026.

During the delicate procedure, surgeons successfully removed the steel rods while carefully managing the complex injuries associated with the trauma.

The surgery was led by Dr. Victor Bargoria together with the anaesthesia team led by Dr. Muchiri P.V., supported by a multidisciplinary team comprising trauma specialists, orthopaedic surgeons, nurses, and critical care personnel.

The patient is currently stable and recovering under close observation and comprehensive multidisciplinary care at the hospital,” the hospital said.
