Kitale: Grade 3 Pupil Commits Suicide After Being Disciplined by Mother

A grade 3 pupil of Mabonde Primary School in Kiminini Constituency, Trans Nzoia County, on Saturday allegedly committed suicide by hanging herself with a piece of cloth.

According to Wamuini area Assistant Chief Joseph Chege, he received news from members of public that the 12-year old was found hanging from their house roof.

Chege said the deceased had initially quarreled with her mother over a Ksh100 note.

The mother is said to have later disciplined her before leaving to Wamuini market where she operates her business, leaving the girl behind.

The girl is said to have handed herself after she was disciplined by her mother over Ksh100 note.

I received information from members of public that one child aged 12 years had hanged herself. When we rushed to the scene, we confirmed that in deed she had committed suicide,” said the area assistant chief.

Be close to children

It is reported that for the last three years, the girl had developed unbecoming behaviour which might have led her to commit suicide.

Following the incident, Eliud Toemoi, a counselling psychologist in Kitale town has advised parents to always be close to their children so that similar incidents can be averted.

A parent should not just punish a child for the sake of doing it. Instead, they should make their children their close friends so that even in the event they subject them to some form of punishment, they will understand why they are punished,” Tormoi said.

He also asked parents to monitor what their children are exposed to in the television programmes.

We should also be very careful with what we allow our children to watch in our television channels. Some scenes are very suicidal and encourage children to take such actions” he added.

The girl’s body has since been taken to Kitale County Referral Hospital morgue awaiting autopsy.

Further, officers from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) have launched a probe to uncertain circumstances under which the grade 3 pupil died.
