Thousands of traders across Trans Nzoia County are set to benefit from safe trading zones after the completion of the ultra-modern Masinde Muliro Market and Kenya Railways Centre.

The two facilities are being constructed in Kitale town.

Trade and Industrialization County Executive Committee Member Stanley Kirui on Tuesday underscored Governor George Natembeya’s commitment to alleviate the perennial suffering of traders who had for decades lacked space to do trade.

The Masinde Muliro ultra-modern Trading Centre being put up at a cost of Ksh840 million, will according to the CECM, house over 3,500 small-scale while the one on the Kenya Railways grounds will accommodate 1,500 traders.

The traders who sell vegetables, fruits, cereals, onions, vegetables, maize, kitchenware and other assorted items have been during five decades trading in open-air spaces with no safety, hygiene, or sanitation facilities.

The World Bank and the County government of Trans Nzoia funded the construction of the ultra-modern Masinde Muliro trading complex.

As a permanent building, the ultra-modern trading centre that is nearing optimization will be fully furnished with sanitation facilities, market stalls, water and a power adequate electricity supply to help traders focus on their business unhindered,” the Trade Executive revealed.

In addition, Kirui noted that the completion of the markets together with the Suam one-stop border post will act as an entry point and a catalyst to facilitate business integration among the border communities.

I wish to challenge the business community especially the Boda Boda industry to support this administration through remittance of tax that has already been reduced by the governor to enable us to provide services to all residents,” said the CECM.

He added that the operationalization of the ultra-modern Muliro market complex, the railway market and the One-stop border post will spur the economy of Trans Nzoia county.
