Uasin Gishu Governor Jonathan Bii Chelilim alias Koti Moja has finally gazetted the date for the first sitting of the Uasin Gishu County Assembly.
In a special issue of the Kenya Gazzette dated September 14, 2022, Koti Moja set September 21, 2022, as the date the Members of County Assembly-elect together with those nominated will be sworn in.
“IN EXERCISE of the powers conferred by Standing Order 3(1) of the County Assembly of Uasin Gishu Standing Orders, I, Jonathan Bii Chelilim, Governor of the County of Uasin Gishu issue notice that the first sitting of the County Assembly shall be held at the County Assembly premises on Wednesday, 21st September, 2022, at 9.00 a.m,” the governor said.

The gazette notice comes days after IEBC published the names of nominated MCAs.
Publication of the nominated MCAs had delayed the convening of the first Assembly sittings across the country.
In Uasin Gishu, IEBC listed 14 nominated MCAs representing ethnic minority groups, youths and gender top-up.
Of the 14, 13 were from UDA and one from the Jubilee party.

In the first County Assembly Sitting, just after they take an oath of office, the MCAs will elect a new speaker and deputy speaker.

The position of the Uasin Gishu County Assembly Speaker has already been advertised.
Interested candidates are required to pick nomination papers from the County Assembly Clerk and return them at least 48 hours before the start of the inaugural sitting.
Speaker seat
Several candidates have expressed interest in the influential seat.

They include the outgoing leader of the majority Josephat Lowoi, former Speaker Isaac Terer, lawyer Christopher Mitei and Uasin Gishu County Lands Chief Officer Advocate Ruth Chelashaw.
Lawyer Kipchumba Karori was also in the race but later opted out saying he was not available to take up the role.
A clear picture of the race will be known by Monday morning when they return the papers.
Uasin Gishu County Assembly has 30 elected MCAs and 14 nominated.
