The County Government of Uasin Gishu is planning to return litter bins on the streets of Eldoret town.
The bins had been installed in various strategic areas across the town by the Department of Environment as part of an initiative to enhance cleanliness.
However, months after they were installed, the country removed them.
But the Eldoret Municipality is now planning to return them, as part of an effort to make the town clean, in readiness for the city status.
According to the Eldoret Town Manager Tito Koiyet, they were forced to withdraw the litter bins from the streets after locals started misusing them.

“We are going to introduce litter bins soon where people can throw things like banana peels when walking in town. We had then before but realized some people were putting in garbage from their premises, which was not the intended purpose,” Koiyet said.
Solid waste management
But before the litter bins are re-introduced, the Eldoret town Manager says they were working on ensuring locals have the right mindset about waste disposal.
He noted that the county has for the last few years heavily invested in ensuring they have the capacity to collect garbage and correctly dispose of it.
“We have enough lorries, skip containers, side loaders and truckers, all meant to ensure we are able to collect garbage from our estates for proper disposal,” Koiyet said.
Waste management capacity is one of the factors that are usually looked at before a town gets an elevation to the city’s status.

But aside from enhancing the waste management capability, the Eldoret Town Manager says there is a need for the locals to be also psychologically prepared and with the right attitude on matters of waste disposal.
“You should make sure that your garbage is collected from the doorstep. The idea is to make Eldoret clean and have people with the right mentality of a city,” said the Eldoret town manager.
