Uasin Gishu Governor Jackson Mandago has expressed the need for a change of the law that requires counties to procure drugs directly from the Kenya Medical Supplies Agency (KeMSA).
Mandago said if elected senator, he will spearhead the change of the law to reform KEMSA into county institutions, pointing out that the Health Sector is devolved and counties run more health facilities.
The governor speaking in Salama, Ainapkoi sub-county during meet the meet-the-people tour said shortages of drugs sometimes are experienced in health facilities as KEMSA at times doesn’t have drugs and the law does not allow counties to purchase from other agencies hence the need for a change.
“The shortages of drugs sometimes are experienced in our health facilities and is not our fault. We usually have money and at times KEMSA doesn’t have drugs but the law can’t allow us to purchase drugs from other agencies. This is why there is a need to change the law so that counties can have more options where they can get the drugs,” Mandago said.
The governor is seeking to fly the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) ticket for the Senate seat in the August 9, 2022, general elections.
He has been engaging locals in a meet-the-people tour as he popularizes his bid to be Uasin Gishu’s third Senator.
While in Seiyo, Cheptiret/Kipachamo ward, Kesses Sub County, Mandago listed a number of reasons as to why he should be supported.
“I have a wide experience as a governor and this will help network for more opportunities for the residents of Uasin Gishu,” Mandago said.
Under his administration, the county has had agreements with several institutions that allows students from Uasin Gishu to travel to Finland and recently Canada for further studies.
“I will seek to increase the opportunities for students traveling abroad from my county,” he promised.
