Members of the Uasin Gishu County Assembly have asked for a report on the status of the implementation of recommendations adopted in regards to a probe into the County Finland Scholarship Program.
MCAs had in March 2023 adopted a report by an ad hoc committee that was formed to look into a petition filed by a section of locals over the Finland Program.
Among the recommendations of the committee chaired by Ainabkoi/Olare MCA Gilbert Chepkong’a was that top government officials involved in the program step aside to allow the probe.
Moving the motion seeking a status report on the implementation, Chepkong’a said for the assembly to be seen working, there was need for members to be informed on whether the recommendations had been acted upon or not.

“I am asking the leader of the majority to issue a statement explaining the status of implementation progress within 14 days,” the MCA said.
He noted that, they had in April passed a similar motion but no report was availed to them.
Tarakawa MCA Thomas Yego supported the statement, pointing out that during the burial of one of the Finland program beneficiaries, locals had also wanted to know the status of the implementation of the report.
Implemented partially
Yego further expressed concerns that some of the county officials that the committee recommended steps aside were still in office.
“From the look of things, it seems the report was implemented partially. There are some people out of office while others are still in office,” noted the Tarakwa MCA.
“How can a probe be done when somebody is still holding office? We want the recommendations adopted by this house be implemented fully,” he added.
Among the individuals that the ad hoc committee recommended they be suspended include the Director of the County Education Revolving Fund Joel Ruto and his deputy Meshack Rono and the County Attorney Stephen Lel.

The directors have since been suspended but the County Attorney has remained in office.
Responding to the statement, majority chief whip Julius Songok assured that the leader of the majority will provide the detailed report within the requested time.
“The report will be brought to this house as soon as possible and an explanation as to why some have might not been implemented will also be brought to this house,” Songok said.
