Media Council of Kenya to Launch Online Short Courses

The Media Council of Kenya (MCK) is planning to roll out online short courses for photography and videography.

Senior Officer, Curriculum Development, at MCK, Julius Sigei says the program is expected to be launched as soon as September 2022.

We will launch it to the public very soon, so be on the lookout,” Sigei said during a Journalism accreditation drive at The Eldoret National Polytechnic (TENP) on Friday, July 29, 2022.

Speaking during the event, the MCK Senior Officer said “these courses are going to help many people with solid skills that will see them excel in their respective fields.

The online short courses, Sigei says, will be open to everyone.

The fee structure is concealed, a person is supposed only to log into the portal and confirm,” he said.

You do not need to have qualifications. Just log into the portal and apply once it is open,” he added.

MCK accreditation for journalists

Once the initiative is rolled out, the trainees will be required to take photos and videos from the ground and post them on the portal as part of their coursework.

The MCK trainers involved in the program will then give marks on the work done by the trainees.

The online short courses will be open to everyone.

On his part, MCK Rift Valley Regional Coordinator, Jackson Karanja, encouraged media students to keep practising using available devices to sharpen the skills that will enable them secure job opportunities in the media industry.

Rebecca Mutiso, the MCK Accreditation and Compliance Officer, affirmed the importance of accreditation journalism students, pointing out that it is essential in protecting them from harassment while executing their duties.

The MCK press card, Mutiso said, also offers permission to journalists to do their work anywhere without any doubt, as it creates trust in the interviewees.

The Media Council of Kenya (MCK) is an independent public institution mandated for the regulation of media and the conduct and discipline of journalists in Kenya.

It amongst other registers and accredits journalists.

During accreditation, the journalists agree to adhere to the Code of Conduct and Practice of Journalism in Kenya.
