Moi Univesity Lecturers Suspend Their Strike

Learning at Moi University is set to resume after lecturers who have been on strike for the last three weeks reached an agreement with the management.

Universities Academic Staff Union (UASU) National Secretary General Constantine Wesonga, on Tuesday, September 9, 2025, announced that they have suspended the strike following an engagement with the Moi University Council.

We have reached an amicable solution and we therefore announced that the strike has been suspended,” Wesonga told journalists at the Moi University’s main campus in Kesses, Uasin Gishu County.

According to the union official, the agreement to end the strike was based on the need to work together with other stakeholders towards addressing issues the public university has been facing.

The deal to end the strike was reached after a series of high-level crisis meetings involving UASU and Moi University top officials.

University Council Chairperson Prof Noah Midamba and acting Vice Chancellor Prof Kosgey Kotut were present during the UASU announcement to end the strike that has crippled learning at the institution.

The lecturers had gone on strike to demand the full implementation of the November 2024 return-to-work agreement brokered by the Ministry of Education.

They had accused the university management of ignoring the over 25 agreements reached, including the use of KSh 500 million from the National Treasury to pay some of their arrears.

Moi University has been facing financial challenges that have affected operations and also led to the stalling of several multi-million-shilling projects.
