The Cabinet Secretary for Education, Julius Migos Ogamba, has appointed five members to the Council of the recently created Kerio Valley University College.
In Gazette Notice dated October 30, 2026, CS Ogamba appointed Judson Obiria Nyabuto, Simon Ole Masi, Netty Chemutai, Mary Amboka and Japheth Kibet Sugut to be members of the Council.
The appointment is made under Section 36 (1) (d) of the Universities Act, Cap. 210, and is for a period of three years with effect from October 30, 2026.

The appointment of the Council comes four months after the government officially gazetted the establishment of the institution, paving the way for the first university in Elgeyo Marakwet County.
When was Kerio Valley University College established?
Kerio Valley University College was established through a Gazette Notice dated June 18, 2026, and is a constituent college of the University of Eldoret which is mentoring it towards full charter status.
The university college is initially based at Tambach Teachers Training College, an institution that has churned out tutors since 1991, before expanding to other campuses. 2702
The institution admitted its first cohort of students in September this year.
“The government has officially gazetted Kerio Valley University College, paving the way for the establishment of the first university in Elgeyo Marakwet County,” the county governor announced at the time.
The multi-campus institution will have a presence in Tambach, Mokoro, Chebara Agricultural Training Centre and Kimwarer, leveraging existing infrastructure including 60 acres ceded by Tambach TTC and land donated by the community in Mokoro in 2014.

The establishment follows years of lobbying by local leaders. Elgeyo Marakwet County began the push for a university 11 years ago, but the attempt flopped in 2017 after the Ministry barred satellite campuses.
The process was revived in September 2022 when Governor Rotich inaugurated a 15-member taskforce chaired by University of Eldoret Vice Chancellor Prof. Thomas Cheruiyot to draw a roadmap for the upgrade.
