MTRH Strengthens Ebola Preparedness and Response

Following the confirmation of the first case of Ebola virus disease (EVD) in Kenya, Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital (MTRH) has further strengthened its preparedness and response measures to ensure the timely identification, isolation, and appropriate management of any suspected cases.

The Hospital has reinforced infection prevention and control (IPC) practices, enhanced surveillance and early detection systems, and sensitised healthcare workers on the identification of suspected Ebola cases, safe patient handling, appropriate use of personal protective equipment (PPE), and other critical infection prevention measures.

Given MTRH’s strategic location and proximity to the Kenya-Uganda border points, the Hospital remains well positioned to support emergency preparedness and response efforts. MTRH continues to strengthen coordination and collaboration with the Ministry of Health, County health authorities, and other stakeholders to ensure a coordinated and effective response.

The Hospital has also taken steps to ensure the availability of essential supplies, equipment, and protective gear required for the safe management of suspected cases. These measures are aimed at protecting patients, healthcare workers, visitors, and the wider community while maintaining the continuity of essential health services.

“At MTRH, the safety of our patients, healthcare workers, and the community remains our highest priority. We are closely monitoring the situation and have put in place the necessary preparedness measures to ensure that any suspected case is identified promptly, safely isolated, and appropriately managed,” said the MTRH CEO Dr Phillip Kirwa.

Dr Kirwa further urged the public to remain calm, vigilant, and to rely on information from credible health authorities. MTRH is prepared and able to respond rapidly and effectively should a suspected Ebola case be identified.

MTRH further said it remains committed to maintaining a high level of vigilance and preparedness and to protecting the health and safety of the communities it serves.
