Nandi County Declares Quarantine After Outbreak of Lumpy Skin Disease

The County Government of Nandi has imposed a countywide quarantine following a confirmed outbreak of Lumpy Skin Disease (LSD), a highly contagious viral illness affecting cattle.

According to a press briefing issued by the CECM for Agriculture and Co-operative Development, Dr. Kiplimo Araap Lagat, the disease has been detected across several wards in Chesumei, Mosop, Emgwen, Nandi Hills, Aldai, and Tinderet sub-counties.

In the statement, farmers were warned that “No cattle will be allowed to move into or out of Nandi County unless written permission is granted by the Directorate of Veterinary Services.”

Additionally, all livestock sale yards have been shut down, and all communal cattle dipping activities suspended.

The county government said the measures, though disruptive, are essential to curb rapid transmission.

These measures are temporary, but critical. They are intended to break the chain of transmission and protect our farmers from deeper economic losses,” the statement noted.

What is Lumpy skin disease?

Lumpy Skin Disease, spread mainly through biting insects, does not infect humans but causes severe economic losses through reduced milk production, weight loss, hide damage, and reproductive complications.

So far, the County Directorate of Veterinary Services reports that 2,862 cattle have been vaccinated, with more vaccines being mobilized.

Surveillance teams remain on the ground and farmers have been urged to isolate sick animals and report any suspected cases immediately.

Dr. Daniel Chepkwony, the Acting County Director of Veterinary Services, formalized the quarantine through an official notice dated 18 November 2025, reinforcing movement restrictions and mandatory disease-prevention protocols.

The county government assured residents that it has the capacity to contain the outbreak.

Dr. Lagat said, “We have the technical capacity, the personnel, and the resources required to manage this outbreak.”

Farmers were encouraged to stay calm, follow all biosecurity measures, and avoid unnecessary animal movements as the county continues vaccination, surveillance, and public sensitization.
