The County Government of Nandi, through the Department of Sports, Youth Affairs, and Arts in partnership with Athletics Kenya (AK) on Tuesday, April 5, 2022, held its annual track and field championship at Eliud Kipchoge Complex in Kapsabet.
The championship attracted more than 200 athletes across the county, who will then represent the county at the regional level.
Athletes participated in the 100m, 200m, 800m, and 10,000m races.
In a much-contested 10km men’s race, Josten Kipchirchir scooped the first position followed closely by Silas Kiptoo and Jackson Kipleting in the third position.
“I anticipated a tough race, my main aim was to make it to the top three positions. The race started off in a tense and very fast mode that needed more energy and focus, but I’m glad I made it to the first position,” stated Kipchirchir Josten.
In the women’s 10km race, Millicent Jelimo bagged the first position followed by Ludwinah Chepng’etich and Rosalinda Chepketer.
“The race wasn’t as tough as I thought but I’m grateful that I managed to be first. I trained hard for this race and I’m grateful I’ve seen my hard work. I’m looking forward to performing better at the regional level,” said Millicent Jelimo.
Kennedy Tanui, Sports Chief Officer, lauded the athletes for the tremendous participation they took during the championship.
He asked them to continue practicing and keenly focus on the regional races that will be held on April 19.
“I’m grateful that the event was successful and to see more than 200 athletes come out to participate in the championship. I hope that during the regional level they will represent our county well and even bag the first three positions,” said Tanui.
Hosea Sanga, the Athletics Kenya representative to Nandi asked the athletes that they train well and ensure that they work with their coaches on the correct food and what medication to avoid in situations when one is sick.
He further urged them to remain focused and to keep on practicing.
