The Ministry of Agriculture should hasten availing of the subsidized fertiliser.
Governor George Natembeya on Tuesday regretted that heavy rains have started but most farmers have not received the essential commodity for planting.
After the fertiliser is available, Natembeya urged the Ministry of Agriculture to give county governments the responsibility to issue it directly to farmers.
This he said, will help to cut transportation costs by farmers from major towns to villages.
The county boss was addressing hundreds of farmers at Wiyeta, Bidii, and Wehoya in Cherangany, Kwanza and Kiminini sub-counties during a free maize seed distribution by his administration.
“Let the government allow us to deliver the fertiliser to villages,” said Natembeya.
The government, he said, should consider further reducing the cost of a 50kg bag of fertiliser to minimise production costs.
For a farmer to make profits from maize farming, he said, a bag of fertiliser should be subsidised to Ksh 1,000. The government has set Ksh 3,500 for a bag of subsidised fertilizer.
“Farmers should be taken care of to encourage them to realize high yields,” said the governor.
In addition, Governor Natembeya said farming will be made profitable if aids for input are available.
The governor was accompanied by Sinyereri MCA John Makhanu, Obed Mwale(Matisi), Edwin Kosgey(Suwerwa), Alfred Weswa(Sirende), Francis Mwangi(Bidii), Kisiang’ani Wambwa(Machewa) and Tabitha Waruguru(Nominated).
Agriculture CECM Phanice Khatundi, her Chief Officer Sammy Sichangi, Joseph Wasike for Roads and their Livestock Development counterpart Patrick Osoro and chief of staff Dickson Wamocho were also present.
