A new Agikuyu community spokesperson in Uasin Gishu County has been coronated.

Gatonye wa Kimani was installed to the position, and will now be the lead person in championing the interest of the community in the county.

The coronation of wa Kimani was conducted at an Eldoret hotel on Friday, January 14, 2022, in a colorful traditional ceremony.

Kikuyu Council of Elders led by Wachira wa Kiasi and Muthamaki Dominic Ng’era conducted the ceremony.

This comes amid divisions among the Agikuyu Community in Uasin Gishu County.

A section of elders in the community had already installed another spokesperson George Nyanjui in December 2021.

But according to one of the elders who led the Friday coronation, Mzee Nyanjui was installed without following due process of the Agikuyu culture.

“This is the reason elders of this community and its members have not recognized him,” said the elder.

With the coronation of Gatonye wa Kimani, he now officially takes over from the previous holder of the position the late Kamunu wa Kabari.

Wa Kabari died in October 2021, while still serving in the position.

Speaking during the event, Mzee wa Kimani pledged to continue championing for the unity of the Agikuyu community living within Uasin Gishu County.

“I will undertake my responsibilities as a Kikuyu elder. I promise to promote peace and unity especially as we gear up to the elections,” he said.

The new Agikuyu community spokesperson is now expected to be the one presiding over all Agikuyu community traditional ceremonies in the county.

“He will also provide direction to the community in the August general election,” said Mzee Ng’era, member of the Kikuyu Council of Elders.

With the political influence that the position comes with, the coronation also attracted a number of politicians who attended.

They included Uasin Gishu Deputy Governor Daniel Chemno, Kesses MP Dr. Swarup Mishra, and Uasin Gishu gubernatorial aspirants billionaire businessman Bundotich Zedekiah Kiprop alias Buzeki and Veska Kangogo.
