Eldoret City will, for the first time in history, be hosting Mashujaa Day, the national day in Kenya, which is observed on 20 October as a public holiday to collectively honour all those who contributed towards the struggle for Kenya’s independence or positively contributed in post-independence Kenya.
The celebrations will be co-hosted by three counties – Uasin Gishu, Nandi and Elgeyo Marakwet, which was initially selected as host. Ahead of the celebrations, there are multiple projects ongoing across the three counties. Uasin Gishu News highlights some of those projects within Eldoret City.
Kipchoge Keino Stadium
Kipchoge Keino Stadium has been selected as a venue for the Mashujaa Day celebrations. Construction work at the stadium had stalled for over 10 years, but with the upcoming events, work is being hastened.
“The stadium is now 58% ready and will host the main Mashujaa Day celebration, whose theme is Security, Sports and Finance,” Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen said after visiting the facility on Friday, August 21, 2026.
The stadium is expected to be ready before October 20th.
Once completed, the stadium will have CAF-compliant infrastructure, including floodlights, international-standard changing rooms and modern media facilities.
The modernisation of the 64 Stadium in Eldoret is also underway.
Eldoret getting a facelift
Aside from the two stadiums, there are multiple projects ongoing across Eldoret city. Cabro paving is underway along Oloo Street, which is expected to improve the city’s streetscape, enhance accessibility and create a more conducive environment for business and investment.
Eastleigh Road is also set for cabro installation, marking another step in the efforts to improve urban mobility and provide better road infrastructure for residents and businesses.
Meanwhile, at Iten Stage, preparations are underway for cabro works that will improve access, ease movement and enhance the area’s appearance.
Road projects ongoing in Eldoret
There are also several road projects being implemented as part of the Mashujaa Day celebration preparations, including the ongoing road enhancement works at the Prisons area, opposite Kipchoge Stadium.
Additionally, roads in Pioneer Estate are set for tarmacking to improve access and strengthen connectivity to the ongoing Affordable Housing development.
