Matharu Economic Stimulus Programme (ESP) market in Uasin Gishu County is complete, now awaiting official handover, Interior Principal Secretary Raymond Omollo has announced
The project, which broke ground in May 2024, is part of a nationwide effort to modernize trading spaces for small-scale ‘hustler’ businesses, providing a secure and dignified environment for local enterprise in this high-density peri-urban hub of Kesses Sub-county.

Designed to host over 300 traders, the Matharu ESP market features modern stalls, a reliable water reticulation system, secure perimeter fencing and a flexible open-air section for dynamic vending.
“In addition to infrastructure, the State Department for Internal Security and National Administration coordinated local frameworks to ensure the market operates safely and orderly, protecting both traders and customers while fostering confidence in the new commercial space,” PS Omollo said.

Matharu ESP market is one of the 14 markets the national government is constructing across Uasin Gishu County.
The government is also constructing the Champions Retail Market in Eldoret City.

“Nationally, we are building 600 modern markets, fulfilling our promise to Mama Mboga that they will do their business in decent, safe and dignified spaces,” President William Ruto said after he inspected the Champions Retail Market in Eldoret City.
