President William Ruto on January 4, 2023, held his first media interview since his inauguration in September 2022.

The interview was streamed live on all leading TV stations in the country.

While the interview focused more on what he has achieved so far as the Head of State and the plans that he has for the country, there was a light moment when the issue of his wedding ring came up.

The matter popped up after Kenyans following the interview noticed that the President was not wearing his wedding ring.

It has not been a norm for Ruto to have his wedding ring on – at least from his time as the Deputy President – until his inauguration as the fifth President.

Asked why he had no ring, the President said, “I was in a hurry to come here, I was having some meetings in the office and I had to come here. So they told me you have to dress up and go, so in the process of all that, I forgot my ring.”

But by the time he was being asked about the ring, during the 9 pm interview, he had put it on. In an earlier interview for the Swahili version that started at 7 pm, he had no ring – after which netizens noticed.

Ruto’s wedding ring story

However, Ruto went further to narrate some untold history about his wedding.

Ruto had no wedding ring during his 7 pm interview, raising eyebrows amongst netizens.

He also revealed its cost.

Let me tell you the story of the ring now that you have asked. You know when Rachel and I got married, we went to a fellow hapo River Road, so we bought rings there, by then it was Sh700. It got tired along the way so ikavunjika(got broken). Rachel is the one who took longer to get a replacement,” he narrated.

Ruto and the first lady Mama Rachael Ruto got married in 1991 at African Inland Church (AIC).

While the President only started wearing his wedding ring recently, his wife has always had it on.
