The First Lady Mama Rachel Ruto on Saturday, November 7, 2025, visited Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital (MTRH) to comfort survivors of the recent Chesongoch mudslide tragedy.
She also spent time with infants at the Newborn Unit.
The First Lady was received by the Hospital’s Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Philip Kirwa, and members of staff.
During the visit, she conveyed her heartfelt sympathies to the victims and families affected by the mudslide, which claimed several lives and displaced dozens of residents in Elgeyo Marakwet County.

The First Lady later toured MTRH Riley Mother and Baby Hospital, where she interacted with mothers and caregivers, offering words of encouragement and support.
She reaffirmed her commitment to maternal and child health.
Rachel Ruto visits Chesongoch
Early in the day, the first lady was in Chesongoch where the over 150 households were affected by the mudslides.
“To lose so many loved ones at once is a burden no heart can ever bear. As a nation, we stand in mourning with all the families affected by the heartbreaking tragedy in Chesongoch, Elgeyo Marakwet County. Our thoughts and prayers remain with everyone who has been touched by this loss,” the first lady said.
“To those still recovering in various health facilities, we hold you close in prayer and wish you strength and a full recovery,” she added.

Meanwhile, the Government continues to lead coordinated rescue, recovery, humanitarian assistance and stabilization efforts following the mudslide incident in ElgeyoMarakwet County.
What’s the current death toll for Chesongoch landslide?
“As of today (November 7, 2025) death toll remains at 37, with 9 persons hospitalized and receiving comprehensive medical and psychosocial support. 11 persons are still missing, and multi-agency search and recovery operations continue with sustained intensity,” the government said in a statement on November 7, 2025.
In addition, Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen said the Government is implementing a comprehensive one-month coordinated action plan, which includes verification of genuine beneficiary lists, rehabilitation of the escarpment, enhanced security deployment, and redesigning all key road networks to withstand climate-related risks.
