Uasin Gishu Senator Prof. Margaret Kamar has congratulated Narc Kenya Party leader Martha Karua following her appointment as the Azimio la Umoja One Kenya Coalition running mate.
Karua was named running mate on Monday, May 16, 2022, a move that has seen her enter Kenya’s history books as the first woman to be a deputy to the presidential candidate under the current constitution promulgated in 2010.
She will be the running mate to former Prime Minister Raila Odinga.
Responding to the appointment that has elicited mixed reactions across the county, the Uasin Gishu Senator said Karua deserved to get the position.
Prof. Kamar who is also the Senate Deputy Speaker further noted that the country’s future is for women.
“Indeed the future is women. Congratulations @MarthaKarua, your firmness and resolve towards a fair and just society, gender equality and alleviating poverty is a testament to your leadership,” she said in one of the tweets posted on May 17, 2022.
The legislator further thanked the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) leader for what she said was him “recognizing the leadership gap that was sorely needed.”
She expressed optimism that the gap will be ‘rightfully filled by women’.
“This historic occasion will go down as a pivotal in steering the nation towards a future that we all strive for,” noted the Senator, who also served as a Member of Parliament in the then Eldoret South Constituency.
Prof. Kamar who is among the renowned women politicians in the county has been serving as Senator since 2017, and she is said to have opted out of the re-election bid recently.
Martha Karua’s running mate appointment continues to excite gender equality crusaders in the country.
She now hopes to help deliver the Mount Kenya votes to the former Prime Minister and make history as Kenya’s first Deputy President.
