Uasin Gishu Governor Jonathan Bii Chelilim has challenged the youth to take a proactive role in the agriculture sector.
Speaking during the annual farmers’ field day at Chebororwa Agricultural Training College (ATC), Chelilim said the youth have an advantage due to modern-day technological advances.
He noted that the young generation should now look at ways to harness technological advancements.
“There is a need for youth to harness technological advancements in agriculture and take up farming roles, even as global economies struggle to be food secure,” the county boss said.

“The youth have an advantage because of technological advancements and their rich knowledge in harnessing skills online,” he added.
Chelilim further pledged that his administration will fast-track the process of making Chebororwa ATC an autonomous institution.
The process of giving the ATC autonomy is contained in a bill drafted this year by the County Executive.
“My government will fastrack Chebororwa ATC Incorporation Bill 2022, which will enable the institution to have the autonomy to widen its mandate to address, among others, training and operationalize its auxiliary potential,” said the governor.
The ATC was last year transformed into a centre of excellence for high-value crops – to complement the county government’s campaign to rally locals into planting high-value crops.
It has been producing seeds for macadamia, tissue bananas and other high-value crops like coffee.
Aside from crops, the ATC located on the slopes of Cherangany Hills is also used as a model for rearing cows, sheep and goats.
