Sungura village in Huruma estate on the outskirts of Eldoret town has been plunged into deep mourning following a fire incident that left a three-year-old girl burnt beyond recognition.
The Monday afternoon fire also razed down over 26 houses, forcing affected families to spend their night in cold.
Eyewitnesses say the fire started from a house whose tenant was cooking using a stove before spreading to adjacent houses.
“One of the houses that caught fire as a result of the incident had a gas cylinder which exploded – spreading further to other houses,” an eye witness told Uasin Gishu News.
Parents of the deceased child said they had left her at home as they went about their daily activities before they were called by neighbors who informed them about the incident.
Despite the Uasin Gishu County firefighters arriving at the scene to put off the fire, over 20 tenants had already been left with no place to call home anymore.
One of the candidates sitting for the ongoing Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) was also affected by the fire that razed down his parents’ house.
The affected families are now calling on the county and national government to come to their rescue by providing them with an alternative place they can call home.
