The County Government of Uasin Gishu is working towards the launch of a milk program dubbed “Maziwa ni School Fees” that is set to see dairy farmers in various Farmers Cooperative Societies (FCS’s) pay their children school fees using milk.
Slated to take place in Tuiyo Farmers Cooperative Society at the end of this month, the program not only aims to strengthen cooperative societies through increased milk production but enable students to continuously learn without interruption due to school fees.
The initiative which will be the only in the county is also set to reduce school drop outs as well as creating economic growth.
According to the Cabinet Secretary for Cooperatives and MSMEs Wycliffe Oparanya, Co-ops have the potential of impacting positively into various economies lauding the county for coming up with the ‘brilliant’ program.

“We had discussions with Governor Jonathan Bii on this program and I realized that he has his cooperators at heart. I also want other cooperatives and counties to follow this noble idea of supporting children in schools,” said Oparanya
The program will also see farmers trained on various production mechanisms including financial literacy, quality animal feeds among other training components.
Already, Tuiyo FCS pays school fees for atleast 34 students from 22 schools across the county who have been on boarded into the program.
County Executive Committee Member for Trade and Cooperatives Martha Cheruto and Cooperatives Chief Officer Ruth Samoei formed part of the delegation.
