The University of Eldoret has been trending for the last few days since revelations of an internal memo detailing the new students’ dress code.
In the memo signed by the university’s Dean of Students Dr Lelei Kiboiy, students have been informed that certain dressings will not be allowed inside the institution.
The Chepkoilel-based University has since noted that going forward, all students will be expected to dress in a simple, decent and modest manner.
“It has come to our attention that some students are not observing the university dress code as contained in the Rules and Regulations Governing the Conduct and Discipline of Students,” read part of the internal memo dated January 19, 2023.

“All students are expected to dress in a simple, decent, modest and appropriate attire that facilitates an atmosphere conducive for studies,” it added.
Inappropriate dress
The memo went further to list down dressing that the University of Eldoret considers inappropriate – as per the set rules and regulations.
For ladies, here are dresses that will not be allowed at the university
- Micro/Mini skirts
- Skin tight trousers
- Ragged/torn/ripped jeans
- Tumbo-cut blouses/t-shirts
- Low-cut blouses/dresses
- Micro shorts and transparent dresses
- Attires showing bra straps or sleeveless T-shirts
Further, a number of attires have been banned for men.
They include;
- Sagging trousers
- Clothes revelling chest
- Ragged/torn/ripped jeans

Further, the university says students are expected to maintain gender-compliant attires that reflect their personal details as documented in the university admission records.
Students who will fail to adhere to the dress code risk facing disciplinary action, the institution noted in the internal memo.
“All students are therefore advised to, at all times, desist from inappropriate dressing while at the university as this may warrant disciplinary action,” Kiboiy said.
The memo was copied to the Vice Chancellor, Deputy Vice Chancellors, Registrars, Legal officer, all deans of students, directors, Principal Security Officer, as well as Hostel Officer and the University’s Senate Council Chairperson.
