Kenyan households will soon have access to cheaper cooking gas thanks to the ongoing construction of the Taifa Gas LPG Terminal at the Dongo Kundu Special Economic Zone.
President William Ruto pledged to lower the cost of cooking gas for Kenyan households in a plan driven by strategic private sector investment, expanded infrastructure and increased competition across the LPG value chain.
The nearly completed Taifa Gas LPG Terminal at the Dongo Kundu Special Economic Zone (SEZ) in Mombasa has been touted as a major step towards that goal.
Developed on a 30-acre site approximately four kilometres from the Port of Mombasa, the facility features 12 spherical storage tanks with a combined capacity of 30,000 metric tonnes and provision for future expansion.
Following the President’s groundbreaking visit in February 2023, extensive earthworks transformed the hilly site into one of the region’s largest LPG storage and distribution hubs.
Is Taifa Gas LPG Terminal operational
According to Interior Principal Secretary Raymond Omollo, construction of the storage tanks is complete, with testing underway, while installation of pipelines, electrical systems and instrumentation is advancing steadily.
The terminal will strengthen Kenya’s LPG supply chain through efficient bulk importation, storage and distribution to markets across the country. Its substantial storage capacity and entry as a major player in the sector are expected to enhance competition, reduce supply bottlenecks and drive down the cost of cooking gas for households and businesses.
The project has also generated significant employment opportunities for local communities during both the construction phase and the facility’s anticipated operational stage.
PS Omollo said the State Department for Internal Security and National Administration continues to support the implementation and management of the facility by fostering a secure operating environment and strengthening coordination among regulatory and security agencies, helping ensure the safe handling, controlled distribution and uninterrupted supply of LPG across the country.
