Uasin Gishu Governor Jonathan Bii, on Wednesday, December 13, 2023, hosted officials from the State Department of Housing and Urban Development on the unveiling of the proposed design for Eldoret town’s state-of-the-art market.

The design which was presented by the Secretary of Urban and Metropolitan Development, Eng. Benjamin Njenga showcased a seven-story building that will house basement parking, a dispensary, cold rooms, daycare facilities, and lactation rooms, among other key facilities.

Once complete, the market that is expected to cost Ksh6 billion is expected to not only provide working space for traders but also create job opportunities to thousands of the county residents.

Unveiling of the Eldoret Market design comes barely a week after the government formally advertised tender for the multi-million project.

The open tender was advertised on the government’s website, with interested bidders given up to December 19, 2023 to submit their completed tender documents.

It is estimated that at least 10,000 traders will be housed in the market once complete.

Already, it has been agreed that the market will be set up at the same place that was hosting the Champions Retail Market which was closed in November 2022 after a clash between enforcement officers and the traders.

With the closure of the market, traders have since been forced to relocate to markets outside the town among them the Kimumu/Bahati Wholesale Market which was set up through the European Union (EU) funding, Kahoya Market and other markets in Kapseret and Langas.
