EACC Arrests 5 Traffic Police Officers Along Kisumu-Busia Highway for Bribery

The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) has arrested five traffic police officers attached to Busia Police Station.

According to the anti-graft agency, the five were arrested while allegedly demanding bribes from motorists at a roadblock along the Kisumu–Busia highway, approximately five kilometres from Busia Town.

The arrests, EACC said, follow an investigation they mounted after receiving numerous complaints from motorists and members of the public regarding rampant exortion by the officers manning the roadblock.

During the operation, the officers were found soliciting and demanding bribes from motorists entering or leaving the border town, often without conducting any vehicle checks or enforcing traffic regulations.

Those apprehended include Corporal Hezron Aburi, Corporal Mary Nabei, Police Constable James Weru, Police Constable Mwakwekwe Nyoka, and Police Constable Aisha Abdullahi,” EACC said in a statement on Thursday, November 6, 2025.

The suspects were arrested and taken to the EACC Western Regional Office in Bungoma for statement recording before being booked at Bungoma Police Station for further processing.

EACC said the operation is part of the ongoing crackdown on bribery at public service delivery points to improve access to quality services for all citizens.

The commission is scaling up intelligence gathering and surveillance targeting essential public services and sectors prone to bribery,” the agency said in a statement.
