Construction of Eldoret’s stalled 64 Stadium is set to resume after years of delays, with a Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) technical team conducting a site inspection ahead of the project’s implementation.
The inspection marks a significant milestone for the Ksh 1.1 billion sports facility, which has remained incomplete despite consuming hundreds of millions of shillings and becoming a subject of scrutiny by both county leaders and senators. The project, initially financed through World Bank support before the funding arrangement changed, was later taken over by the Uasin Gishu County Government after the lender exited.
A KDF team led by Lt. Col. Purity W. Githehu, alongside officials from contractor Oriole Homes headed by Director Du Ying, inspected the site on Wednesday, November 4, 2026, in preparation for the resumption of works.
They were received by Uasin Gishu County Executive Committee Member for Lands and Urban Development Edward Sawe, City Board Chairperson Alice Kositany and City Manager Elzeba Busienei.

The team later held a consultative meeting chaired by Sawe to review implementation priorities and agree on the next steps towards restarting construction and ensuring successful completion of the stadium.
64 Stadium among Eldoret’s most notorious stalled developments
The renewed push comes amid growing pressure to complete one of Uasin Gishu’s most high-profile stalled projects. The 64 Stadium project was launched during the administration of former Governor Jackson Mandago and was expected to transform sports infrastructure in Eldoret.
However, financial and implementation challenges slowed progress, leaving the facility incomplete years after construction began.
In May 2025, the Senate County Public Accounts Committee expressed concern over delays at the stadium, noting that despite substantial payments having been made to the contractor, the project remained unfinished. Senators described the facility as a crucial investment for a region globally known for producing elite athletes.
The latest inspection follows recent government efforts to revive stalled sports infrastructure projects in the North Rift, with the Ministry of Defence increasingly playing a role in accelerating project delivery.
A Ministry of Defence-led intervention earlier this year sought to restart construction at the 64 Stadium after the project had stalled for nearly three years.

Boost for Eldoret’s Sporting Ambitions
Once completed, the stadium is expected to provide modern sports facilities for football, athletics and other disciplines while creating opportunities for talent development among young athletes.
County officials say the facility will strengthen Eldoret’s capacity to host regional and national sporting events and further cement its reputation as the “City of Champions.”
The project is particularly significant for a region that has produced numerous Olympic and world champions yet continues to face a shortage of modern sports facilities.
With KDF technical teams, county officials and the contractor now aligning on implementation plans, residents will be watching closely to see whether construction finally resumes and the long-delayed stadium is delivered after years of waiting.
