The Eldoret Water and Sanitation Company (ELDOWAS) has been under fire for the last few days due to concerns from locals about the quality of their water.
This comes amid reports of increased stomachaches amongst the locals within Eldoret City.
Many of those affected by the current situation have taken to social media to express their concerns – pointing an accusing finger at ELDOWAS.
What Eldoret locals are saying about ELDOWAS water
Here are some concerns from locals compiled from Facebook posts by Uasin Gishu News:
Something is wrong with Eldowas Water. Something is in the water,And that something is not fit for human consumption,” posted Tirop IK.
Eldoret residents are consuming “foliar” in form of “ELDOWAS”. Topdressing in it, infections left right and center,’ added another Facebook user, Phanice Cherop.
Another user, Dominic Kipchumba posted: “People are suffering in Eldoret, Watu Wanaumwa na Tumbo na Kuendesha, so kama unakunywa Eldowas water please you are in danger!!!!!”
It was almost a similar concern from Hilda Lakwet Netala.
Netala went further to advise locals, even as she sought a probe into the matter.
Urgent Public Health Concern in Eldoret. We have received alarming reports of a rise in diarrhea, vomiting, and stomach aches in Eldoret, especially affecting children. Many residents are questioning whether this could be linked to water contamination,” read part of her post seen by Uasin Gishu News.
We urge health officials and ELDOWAS to investigate the situation urgently and provide clarity on the cause. In the meantime, residents should take precautions: Boil drinking water or use safe water sources.Practice good hygiene, including regular handwashing. Seek medical attention if symptoms persist or worsen,” she added.
Is ELDOWAS water safe?
With rising concerns about the quality of water from Eldowas, a public company mandated to supply water within Eldoret city, the management has come out to issue an assurance to its customers.
In a post on its social media pages, ELDOWAS affirmed that its water is safe.
We wish to assure our customers and the public that our water undergoes rigorous treatment and quality control processes to meet national drinking water standards before distribution,” read part of the post.
Our Water Quality Assurance Section continuously monitors water quality at all stages—from production to the final consumer—through laboratory testing and compliance checks. Additionally, wastewater treatment and discharge from our plants strictly follow national environmental and public health regulations to prevent contamination,” it added.
However, the company noted that it is currently conducting additional tests on its water supply network to confirm safety.
In addition, it pointed out that it was collaborating with public health authorities to assess reported cases.
We urge the public to report any water quality concerns directly to ELDOWAS via our official communication channels,” ELDOWAS said.
