Three engineering and science students from the University of Eldoret have put Kenya on the global map after representing the country at the Russian-African Forum and Competition for Young Scientists and Engineers in St. Petersburg, Russia.
The trio — Joab Kipkurui Cheruiyot, Gift Mutugi Waweru, and Steve Kyalo — participated in the prestigious six-day international event held from October 12 to 17, 2026.
During the forum, the Kenyan innovators presented a cutting-edge smart energy solution designed to solve off-grid power challenges in rural regions. Their project demonstrates how integrating solar power, second-life electric vehicle (EV) batteries, biogas, and Internet of Things (IoT) technology can deliver affordable, clean, and dependable electricity to remote communities across Africa.

The high-profile event drew young researchers and innovators from 35 countries and over 100 universities, offering a platform for cross-border collaboration, technical learning, and strategic partnerships.
In a statement published on October 31, 2026, the University of Eldoret commended the students for their outstanding achievement and international representation.
“Congratulations to our students for showcasing their innovation and representing the University of Eldoret on the international stage,” the university stated, highlighting the role of youth-led innovation in driving sustainable energy solutions across the continent.
