Elgeyo Marakwet among Beneficiaries of Ksh9.4B Kenya Livestock Commercialization Project (Kelcop)

/

Elgeyo Marakwet is among 10 selected counties that have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Kenya Livestock Commercialization Project (KeLCoP).

Partner Counties will benefit from Ksh9.4 Billion to be disbursed in six years – the period in which the project will be implemented.

The project is funded by the Government of Kenya (GOK) through the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), Heifer International, and Participating Financial Institutions (PFI), among other partners.

A team from the National Government who did a field visit in February identified Soy North, Tambach, Chereng’any/Chebororwa, and Sambirir wards as their priority wards for implementing the project after holding a number of sensitization meetings with the locals and County staff.

The project is set to be fully rolled out in July 2022 and will have a strong focus on the inclusion of women, youth, marginalized tribes, and persons living with disabilities.

At the end of its implementation, it is expected that it will enhance and strengthen poor rural people’s production capacities.

Speaking during the launch of the program in Naivasha, Harry Kimutai the Principal Secretary of Livestock reaffirmed the government’s commitment to working in synergy towards the successful implementation of KeLCoP.

Livestock PS Harry Kimutai speaks during the event on May 24, 2022.

KeLCoP’s overall goal is to contribute to the Government’s agricultural transformation agenda of increasing rural small-scale farmers’ incomes, and food, and nutrition security.

In attendance were the livestock County Executive Member Dr. Joseph Kiyeng, Chief Officer Dr. Benson Kibore, and representative staff from the livestock department.
