Entrepreneur Willy Kenei Emerges as Key Contender in Uasin Gishu Governor Race After Bii’s Senate Appearance

Entrepreneur Willy Kenei has intensified his push for the Uasin Gishu governorship, arguing that recent scrutiny of the county administration has strengthened his case as a viable alternative ahead of the 2027 elections.

Kenei’s remarks come in the wake of Governor Jonathan Bii’s appearance before the Senate Public Accounts Committee on Monday, October 5, where the county leadership faced tough questions over pending bills that have reportedly increased under the current administration.

The governor and senior county officials were also put to task over several audit queries raised by the Auditor General, with some county officers struggling to provide satisfactory responses during the session. The Senate appearance sparked widespread discussion on social media, with many users describing the county’s performance before the committee as underwhelming.

Speaking to Uasin Gishu News, Kenei said the developments had reinforced public calls for accountable and effective leadership in the county.

Willy Kenei’s leadership experience

The businessman, who previously served in leadership roles within the Kenya National Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KNCCI), said his experience in the private sector has equipped him with the skills needed to manage county resources efficiently and attract investment.

“I have spent years building businesses, creating jobs and working with investors. That experience gives me the capacity to provide prudent financial management and ensure every shilling works for the people of Uasin Gishu,” he said.

Kenei further described himself as a leader of integrity, arguing that residents deserve a county government that prioritises transparency, accountability and responsible use of public funds.

He also cited his extensive business networks as one of his strengths, saying they would help open up new investment opportunities and partnerships for the county.

According to Kenei, attracting local and international investors would be key to creating jobs, expanding the county’s revenue base and accelerating development projects.

Competitive UDA race looms in Uasin Gishu governorship race

The race to succeed Governor Bii is already shaping up to be one of the most competitive political contests in the county.

Kenei is expected to battle for the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) ticket against several high-profile aspirants, including Tourism Principal Secretary Prof Julius Bitok.

With all the leading contenders associated with the ruling party, political observers expect the UDA primaries to play a decisive role in determining who ultimately succeeds Bii if he chooses not to seek a second term or faces a strong challenge within the party.

Focus Turns to Governance Record

As the 2027 election cycle gathers momentum, governance, accountability and financial management are emerging as key issues in the Uasin Gishu governor race.

Kenei believes the criticism directed at the county government following the Senate appearance has created an opportunity for voters to reassess their leadership options and consider candidates who can offer a different management approach.

For now, however, the contest remains wide open, with aspirants expected to intensify grassroots mobilisation and political engagements in the coming months as they seek to position themselves ahead of the highly anticipated UDA nominations.
