Plans to construct the proposed Thika–Nairobi Expressway have entered advanced stages, Deputy President Kithure Kindiki has revealed. The project, promised by President William Ruto, aims to significantly ease traffic congestion along the busy Thika Superhighway.
Speaking during an inspection tour of development projects in Kiambu County on Tuesday, Prof. Kindiki stated that feasibility studies and final design works for the elevated route are currently underway.
“We are designing and completing the feasibility studies for the Thika–Nairobi Expressway, which will allow motorists who want to use the elevated route to do so without interfering with the existing expressway,” the Deputy President noted.

1,650 kms of road infrastructure in Kiambu
The Expressway is part of a broader government infrastructure push in Kiambu County, where KSh 152 billion has been allocated for the construction and completion of 1,656 kilometres of roads across all 12 constituencies.
Prof. Kindiki emphasised that the massive investment is designed to boost the region’s rural and urban economies, with a particular focus on improving farm-to-market transport links.
“I am following up on all the roads under construction in the 12 constituencies in Kiambu. The roads are meant to improve the local economies, especially in the rural areas. We want our farmers to transport their produce to the markets on time to avoid spoilage and losses,” DP Kindiki said, adding that adequate funds have also been reserved for hundreds of kilometres of Mau Mau Roads.
Government projects in Kiambu County
During his tour, the Deputy President inspected progress on several key local road networks and community institutions:
- Gatundu South: Prof. Kindiki inspected the ongoing construction of the Wangui–Mundoro–Gaitete Road before addressing residents at Mundoro shopping centre.
- Kiambaa Constituency: He reviewed progress on completed and ongoing projects, including the Banana–Ndenderu, Banana–Ruaka, Nduota–Gathanga–Kigwaru, and Banana–Raini–Karuri High School Junction roads, while the Karura–Gachie–Gacharage road approaches completion.
- Upcoming Works: Contractors are already on site for the Kimachia–Northern Power Road and the Gatuekira–GD–Njuru–Kigwaru Junction Road, alongside preparations for the Roseline–Total Ruaka–Kituamba–Ndenderu route.
- Expansion Plans: The government is also planning the expansion of the Muthaiga Roundabout–Kiambu Town Road costing billions of shillings.
- Karuri KMTC: The DP visited the Karuri Kenya Medical Training College campus, where a KSh 200 million facility is under construction alongside an additional KSh 290 million allocation for student hostels.

Beyond roads, the DP highlighted other ongoing national government initiatives in Kiambu, including 29 modern markets currently under construction (with two more set to begin) and multiple affordable housing projects.
Crackdown on illicit alcohol
Turning to social welfare, Prof. Kindiki issued a stern warning against the manufacturing and sale of illicit brew in the region, urging residents to back the government’s eradication measures.
“We cannot allow young people to be sold alcohol that harms their health and affects their reproductive health. The Government will not tolerate those who manufacture alcohol and add chemicals that harm the health of our young people,” he warned.
