Former Interior Cabinet Secretary Dr. Fred Matiang’i has rejected claims that he is a political ‘project’ of former President Uhuru Kenyatta.
Matiang’i who served under Uhuru in several dockets termed the claims simplistic and misleading.
Speaking during an interview on Citizen TV, the former CS questioned the intent behind those labeling him a ‘project’.
“What does that mean? To be someone’s project?” he asked.
Matiang’i pointed out that Uhuru appointed him to serve in three major Cabinet portfolios for ten years, alongside over 30 other appointees.
“If it’s a question of service, why am I the only one being singled out? Why aren’t people asking me if I’m the World Bank’s project, because I’ve just come from there?” he remarked, referring to his recent consultancy work with international institutions.
Did Uhuru influence Matiang’i to vie for presidency?
Addressing speculation about his 2027 presidential ambitions, Matiang’i clarified that he has not sought permission from Uhuru Kenyatta to run.

However, he acknowledged that he remains in communication with the former president on matters of national interest.
He also dismissed the notion that he’s exclusively backed by the Jubilee Party.
Matiang’i revealed that he has been approached and supported by several opposition leaders and party secretary generals.
What Jeremiah Kioni said about Matiang’i’s presidential bid
The remarks come months after Jubilee Secretary General Jeremiah Kioni announced Matiang’i’s endorsement as the party’s presidential flag bearer in the 2027 general election.

Kioni emphasized Matiang’i’s extensive administrative experience and close working relationship with Uhuru during his second term as president, describing him as a credible and capable leader.
“They said they would be happy if Kenyans accepted Matiang’i as Jubilee’s candidate,” Kioni said.
Matiang’i is of the several politicians eyeing to vie against President William Ruto in 2027.
Others are former Vice President Kalonzo Musyoka, Busia Senator Okiya Omtata and former Chief Justice David Maraga.
Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has also hinted at vying for the seat. However, constitutionally ineligible to vie for any political seat after his impeachment.
