Gichunge Kabeabea: Anti-counterfeit Authority Board Chairperson Charged with Bribery, Acquisition of Proceeds of Crime

The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) has arraigned Josphat Gichunge Kabeabea, Chairperson of the Board of the Anti-Counterfeit Authority, before the Milimani Anti-Corruption Court.

Kabeabea, a former MP, faces four counts of receiving a bribe and one count of acquisition of proceeds of crime.

EACC investigations established that Kabeabea, the former Member of Parliament for Tigania East, allegedly demanded a bribe of Ksh 5 million from a Chinese investor operating as Hongda Automotive Limited on November 11, 2025.

The bribe was reportedly solicited as an inducement to halt claims of the investor’s involvement in counterfeit trade.

Further investigations revealed that the suspect later reduced the amount to Ksh 150,000, which was allegedly sent to a mobile number believed to belong to his personal driver.

Kabeabea was arrested on Friday, November 14, 2025, following a court-authorized search at his residence and offices.

Appearing before Senior Principal Magistrate Celesa Okore, the ACA board chair denied all charges.

He was released on a cash bail of Ksh 1 million, or a Ksh 2 million bond with a surety of a similar amount.

The matter is scheduled for mention on December 8, 2025.
