The Eldoret National Polytechnic (TENP) has earned international recognition for its commitment to environmental sustainability after being ranked first among all Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) institutions in Kenya in the 2026 UI GreenMetric World University Rankings.
Announced on September 24, 2026, in Baku, Azerbaijan, the rankings place the institution at position 1,547 globally, 82nd in Africa and sixth nationally, marking a significant milestone in its commitment to promoting sustainable development within the TVET sector.
According to the Uasin Gishu-based polytechnic, the achievement is attributed to the institution’s good leadership under the guidance of Chief Principal Dr Charles Koech, whose leadership continues to champion environmental responsibility, institutional development and the creation of a clean, green and conducive learning environment.
“Under his leadership, The Eldoret National Polytechnic has continued to strengthen its commitment to sustainability, environmental conservation and responsible resource utilisation, positioning the institution as a leading example of sustainable development within Kenya’s TVET sector,” the institution said.
UI GreenMetric World University Rankings
The UI GreenMetric World University Rankings assess institutions worldwide based on their environmental conditions, sustainability policies and continuous institutional improvement. The assessment focuses on critical areas including infrastructure and green spaces, energy and climate change, water conservation, waste management, sustainable transportation and sustainability education and research.
TENP said the recognition reflects the collective efforts of the institution’s leadership, staff, trainees and stakeholders in promoting environmentally responsible practices and integrating sustainability into training, institutional operations and community engagement.
“As a leading public TVET institution, TENP continues to advance sustainability awareness and environmental stewardship while equipping trainees with the technical skills and knowledge necessary to contribute to sustainable economic and social transformation,” it said.
The achievement further reinforces the institution’s commitment to supporting global efforts to address climate change through clean energy adoption, water conservation, responsible waste management and sustainable institutional practices.
Additionally, the institution said it remains committed to advancing environmental sustainability and the Sustainable Development Goals for the benefit of present and future generations.
