Residents and learners in Iten town have a reason to smile following the commencement of improvement works on the KMTC – St. Patrick Road to bitumen standard.
The road, which connects the Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC) Iten Campus to St. Patrick’s High School and the larger Iten town, has for years been in a deplorable state, especially during the rainy season, making it difficult for students, tutors, patients and residents to access key institutions.
Once completed, the road is expected to ease movement, improve access to learning institutions and health facilities, and enhance the image of Iten as an educational and athletics hub.
”This road is an important artery for our education sector. Upgrading it to bitumen will not only ensure all-weather accessibility but also reduce vehicle maintenance costs and open up the area for investment,” said Felix Kirongi, Iten municipal manager.

Students and locals who have endured dust during the dry season and mud during the rains welcomed the project, saying it will improve learning and reduce lateness.
”We have suffered for long. During rains, taxis refuse to come here. We are happy that finally this road will be tarmacked,” said a KMTC student.

Motorists and boda boda operators plying the route also lauded the initiative, noting that it will boost their businesses and improve safety.
The KMTC – St. Patrick Road is among several roads within Iten Municipality earmarked for upgrading to bitumen as part of the county’s plan to improve urban infrastructure and support economic growth.
Meanwhile, Iten Town is getting a facelift with the paving of the Iten Matatu Terminus with cabro ongoing.
Under the Kazi Kwa Vijana Program, teams are also unclogging drainage systems, collecting garbage, clearing bushes, sweeping streets, and removing illegal dumpsites.
