The Kenya Meteorological Department has issued a heavy rainfall advisory warning that downpours being experienced in several parts of the country are set to intensify over the coming days.
In the advisory released on Tuesday, the department said the rainfall is expected to exceed 20mm in 24 hours between March 19 and March 24, 2026.
“The rainfall being experienced over several parts of the country is expected to intensify to more than 20mm in 24 hours… The intensity is expected to peak between 20th and 23rd March 2026,” the advisory reads in part.
According to the agency, although rainfall intensity may reduce towards March 24, showers will persist in multiple regions including the Lake Victoria Basin, the Rift Valley, and both the Highlands East and West of the Rift Valley — including Nairobi.
Which counties will receive heavy rainfall from March 16th?
Counties expected to be affected include Turkana, Uasin Gishu, Trans Nzoia, Nakuru, Kisumu, Kakamega, Bungoma, Kiambu, Nairobi, Narok, Kajiado, Mombasa, Kilifi, Garissa and parts of northern Kenya among others.
“Residents in all the mentioned areas are advised to be on the lookout for potential floods, flash floods and poor visibility,” the statement said.
It further warned that floodwaters could occur even in areas that may not receive heavy rainfall directly.
“Flood waters may appear in places where it has not rained heavily, especially downstream,” the advisory noted.
Members of the public have also been urged to avoid walking or driving through moving water and to stay away from open fields and trees during storms to minimize the risk of lightning strikes.
The weatherman also raised concerns over landslides in hilly and mountainous areas, particularly around the Aberdare ranges and Mt. Kenya.
“People in landslide prone areas… should be vigilant,” the department added.
Authorities say they will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates should there be any changes.
