Residents of parts of Rift Valley, Western Kenya and the Lake Victoria Basin have been placed on high alert following a fresh Heavy Rainfall Alert issued by the Kenya Meteorological Department (KMD).
According to the advisory dated December 26, 2025, the downpour is expected to begin from December 27, at 3pm and continue until December 30, at 3am, with rainfall intensity projected to increase significantly.
The weather agency warns that some areas may receive more than 30 millimetres of rainfall within 24 hours, posing a serious risk of flooding, especially in low-lying regions and near river basins.

“Heavy rainfall of more than 20mm in 24 hours is expected in parts of the Southeastern lowlands on 27th December 2025. The rainfall is likely to intensify to more than 30mm/24hrs and spread to parts of the Highlands West and East of the Rift Valley, Lake Victoria Basin, as well as the Southern parts of the Coastal region of Kenya on 28th and 29th December 2025,” read part of the advisory.
Which counties will experience high rainfall from December 27?
Counties listed as high-risk include Migori, Homa Bay, Kisii, Narok, Kajiado, Laikipia, Machakos, Nairobi, Kericho, Bomet, southern parts of Kitui, Taita Taveta and Kwale — several of which lie within the Rift Valley and Western Kenya region.
Meteorologists project that the rain intensity will slightly ease towards the end of the alert period.
“It is projected to reduce in intensity on 30th December 2025,” the agency added.

The weatherman also advised residents in all affected counties to remain vigilant for potential flooding, especially those living in flood-prone areas, near rivers and poorly drained urban centres.
The alert has been circulated to key government agencies including the Presidency, Cabinet Secretaries, the National Disaster Operations Centre, Kenya Red Cross, county governments and emergency response units to enhance preparedness and response.
