Mount Kenya University (MKU) is constructing a 1.1 million-litre capacity underground reservoir tank next to the Mwai Kibaki Convention Centre (MKCC) in Thika Campus.

The project, which was approved by the management in December 2024, was motivated by the need to increase the water capacity in the Thika Campus. This underground reservoir tank will collect harvested rainwater from MKCC and other buildings.

At the same time, the university is sinking a solar-powered borehole aimed at enhancing water provision for the campus through supplementing existing water suppliers such as Thika Water and Sewerage Company (ThiWaSCo).

With the implementation of the two projects, the MKU will fully meet the water requirements in the Thika Campus.

The university also recently serviced boreholes in Malindi, Nakuru and Mombasa Campuses and has ensured that there is sufficient water in all other campuses and ODEL Centers.

In addition to the water project, MKU is also contributing to the improvement of the Thika Industrial Area Police Patrol Base through the construction of a police canteen and residential quarters for police officers.

The canteen will be open to members of the public.

“These amenities will support the well-being of the officers and contribute to enhancing community policing within the Thika Industrial Area,” the institution noted.

Through these initiatives, Mount Kenya University is making a significant positive impact on the university fraternity and the local community through improving access to essential resources and supporting local development.
