Access to healthcare in Uasin Gishu County is now set to be back to normal. This is after the county government and the Kenya National Union of Nurses and Midwives reached an agreement that ended a two-week strike.
Nurses and midwives in the county started their strike on December 23, 2024, disrupting some of the health services in county-run facilities.
However, on Thursday, January 9, 2025, the county announced that the issues raised had been resolved.
“After weeks of negotiations and industrial action, the County Government of Uasin Gishu and the Kenya National Union of Nurses and Mid-Wives – Uasin Gishu Branch (KNUNM) have successfully resolved the nurses’ strike,” read part of the statement.
Negotiations between the two parties started on December 27, 2024, and continued over several sessions held this week.
“The deliberations culminated in the signing of a return-to-work-formula on 9th January 2025,” the county said in the statement seen by Uasin Gishu News.
The agreement was signed before a Ministry of Labour and Social Protection-appointed conciliator.

Under the signed agreement, the union called off their strike to allow their members to resume duty on Friday, 10, 2025.
It was also agreed that there would be no victimization from either party.
On salary issues, the county committed to pay nurses and midwives full salaries for December 2024 and January 2025 alongside other staff.
In addition, the nurses will be promoted with effect from February 1, 2025, and the promotion letters will be issued on or before January 20, 2025.
Meanwhile, the county government and the nurses and midwives union reaffirmed their commitment to improving healthcare delivery in the county and ensuring the welfare of healthcare workers.
“The nurses are expected to resume duty immediately, ensuring the seamless provision of health services to the county residents,” the county said.
