Jackline Chepkoech is the new Commonwealth Games 3, 000m steeplechase champion.
Chepkoech, the 2021 World Under-20 3,000 steeplechase gold medallist gave Kenya its second gold medal after winning the women’s Steeplechase in a record of 9:15.68.
The youngster reclaimed the title ahead of Elizabeth Bird of Great Britain who came in the second position in 9:17.79 and Uganda’s Olympian Peruth Chemutai who crossed the tape in 9:23.24 on Friday at Alexander Stadium, Birmingham.
Olympic champion Peruth Chemutai lost steam in the final lap after falling on a steeple as Bird overtook her to claim the silver.
Chepkoech win has received congratulations from across Kenyans, led by Deputy President William Ruto and former Prime Minister Raila Odinga.
In a tweet, DP Ruto said, “Congratulations Jackline Chepkoech for clinching Kenya’s second gold in the Women’s Steeplechase at the Commonwealth games. You are a true champion and wonderful ambassador of our nation.”
“Fantastic run in the 3000m by Jackline Chepkoech beating a talented field to bag Kenya our second Gold medal. Keep running and keep inspiring our youth. The entire nation is proud of you. Kudos!” added ODM leader Raila Odinga, who also tweeted.
Ferdinand Omanyala had won Kenya’s first gold after powering to victory in the 100m finals earlier this week.
