Kenya Association of Technical Training Institutes (KATTI) has announced plans to establish centres of excellence across the country to scout and nurture sports talents.
The move is aimed at aligning Competency Bases Education and Training trainee progression from senior schools.
Speaking during KATTI term three National games held at Nyandarua National Polytechnic, the National chairman for Sports and Recreation Idd Faraj said the move has come amidst concerns of reduced sports activities participated by the technical institutes.
“We are going to pilot for the next few years and ensure selected institutions have the capacity to handle various sporting activities,” he said.
Faraj who’s the principal at Bomet Central TVC noted that many technical and vocational education training (TVET) institutions lacked necessary facilities to build trainees skills in sports.
“Lots of TVET institutions are struggling in sports, however we’ve made good steps as we had a trainee from Kaiboi National Polytechnic representing the nation in 10k walk,” he added.
This year’s KATTI games involves football men and women, volleyball men and women, basketball men and women and netball women.
Dr Joseph Kanyi, the director of TVET said the state department was focused on skill development both in curricular training and co-curricular activities.
“Through such activities we focus on identifying and developing training which is our mandate,” he said.
